Zzyym v. Blinkin (formerly Zzyym v. Pompeo, Zzyym v. Tillerson & Zzyym v. Kerry)

A federal discrimination lawsuit was filed against the U.S. State Department on behalf of an intersex client, Dana Zzyym. Dana was denied a U.S. passport because they could not accurately choose either male or female on the passport application form, and the form does not provide any other gender marker designation.

Hamm v. City of New York et al

Federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on behalf of Thomas Hamm against the City of New York and New York City Department of Correction (DOC) officers and supervisors after a brutal attack on Mr. Hamm while he visited his long-time partner, P.F., at a men’s facility on Rikers Island.

Hively v. Ivy Tech Community College

In groundbreaking 8-3 decision, the full Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation violates federal civil rights law. This came after Lambda Legal urged the Court to reverse a lower court ruling and allow Kimberly Hively to present her case alleging that Ivy Tech Community College, where she worked as an instructor for 14 years, denied her fulltime employment and promotions and eventually terminated her employment because she is a lesbian.

Torres v. Seemeyer

Lambda Legal filed a federal lawsuit on behalf Chelsea and Jessamy Torres, a married lesbian couple, seeking a birth certificate listing both mothers as parents of their son, born in March 2015.

Williams v. Colvin

Lambda Legal filed a federal lawsuit against the Commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA) on behalf of Dave Williams, a widower now living in Chicago, who was denied spousal benefits after the death of his husband, Carl Allen.

Murphy v. Colvin

Lambda Legal filed suit against the Social Security Administration (SSA) on behalf of Kathy Murphy, a Texas widow denied spousal benefits after the death of her wife, and the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (the National Committee), arguing that denying Social Security benefits to same-sex spouses because they live in states that discriminate against their marriages violates the U.S. Constitution.

Passion Star a/k/a Zollicoffer v. Livingston

Lambda Legal filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of Passion Star (legal name: Zollicoffer), a transgender woman currently in the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), arguing that TCDJ officials have displayed deliberate indifference to threats of sexual assault and violence against Ms. Star in TDCJ’s male facilities.

Condon v. Haley

Lambda Legal, in partnership with South Carolina Equality, filed a federal lawsuit in the United States District Court of South Carolina arguing that South Carolina is obligated to allow same-sex couples to marry.
