Lambda Legal Says 'Sign the Pledge' on Second Annual 'Clock In For Equality' Day on May 15th

Find Your State

Know the laws in your state that protect LGBT people and people living with HIV.
May 12, 2008

(New York, Monday, May 12, 2008) — Today, Lambda Legal announced its second annual "Clock In for Equality" day, a national day of action on May 15 to educate and mobilize people to promote workplace fairness for LGBT people.

Participants are urged to sign a pledge agreeing to take specific actions to help increase workplace fairness for LGBT people and those with HIV.

In 2007, individuals seeking workplace fairness generated nearly 1,000 calls to our legal Help Desk, the highest volume in any category. Though Lambda Legal has long fought for workplace protections through its high impact legal work, no federal law exists that expressly forbids discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Of the 20 states that have anti-discrimination laws including sexual orientation, only 14 of those also prohibit discrimination based on gender identity (including Hawaii's protections for housing and public accommodations but not employment).

Clock In for Equality is a key part of Lambda Legal's work, engaging community leaders, employers and individuals to organize against workplace discrimination. Across the country, activists and LGBT allies will be gathering together to discuss workplace fairness and what they can do to combat discrimination.

The Pledge:

I believe that workplace discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and people living with HIV is wrong. I pledge to support workplace equality whenever I can and will strive to do one or more of the following:

Treat LGBT people and people living with HIV with respect in and out of the workplace. Get educated about forms of workplace discrimination that LGBT people and people living with HIV experience.

  • Help make my workplace LGBT- and HIV- friendly.

  • Support my co-workers' (or employees') right to form an LGBT employee resource group.

  • Help improve policies in my workplace that protect the rights of LGBT workers and workers living with HIV and work to carry out existing policies.

  • Help improve laws protecting the rights of LGBT workers and workers living with HIV on the local, state and federal level.

  • Speak out if I witness workplace harassment or discrimination at work or in the community.
