Vermont Gives Marital Protections to Lesbian and Gay Couples

(NEW YORK, April 25, 2000) —Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund commended the Vermont legislature Tuesday for making Vermont the first state in the nation to extend to lesbians and gay men most of the protections and rights traditionally associated with marriage.

High Court to Hear BSA Defense of Anti-Gay Policy

On Wednesday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m. the U.S. Supreme Court will hear argument in Boy Scouts of America v. James Dale.

Lambda Senior Staff Attorney Evan Wolfson will deliver the oral argument on behalf of Dale, the Eagle Scout ousted for being gay after 12 years of exemplary participation. Both Dale and his attorney Evan Wolfson will comment outside the Supreme Court following the hearing.

Students Ask Judge to Open School Doors to Club with Gay Perspective

(SALT LAKE CITY, April 19, 2000) -- Some Salt Lake City students are asking a federal judge to order the assistant superintendent overseeing their high school to open the school door to their club to discuss classroom subjects such as American History, Government and Sociology from the perspective of gay people.

On Thursday, April 20, attorneys for the students will argue the motion before United States District Judge Tena Campbell. The students, their mothers and attorneys will speak with reporters following the hearing.

Lambda Settles Case Against Broker That Turned Away Gay Renters

(NEW YORK, April 14, 2000) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund announced Friday that it has reached a settlement with the Brooklyn broker charged with unlawful discrimination for refusing to rent a one- bedroom apartment in Park Slope to two gay men.

"The word is out that housing discrimination based on sexual orientation cannot be ignored in New York City," said Lambda Staff Attorney Marvin Peguese, who represented the couple, 21-year-old Gabriel Beaton and 24-year-old Philip Alberti.
