Q. During your time at Lambda Legal, you have done a significant amount of work to protect the rights of LGBT families. Based on your experience in this work, what do you think is at stake from a litigation perspective in the current battle over the makeup of the federal courts?

Lambda Legal can't fight every battle or react to every misinterpretation of the law uttered by someone hostile to LGBT rights.

So the question of what to do came up when, on March 4, newly-elected Virginia Attorney General Kenneth T. Cuccinelli, II wrote to officials heading Virginia's public universities, urging them to rescind their policies against discrimination based on sexual orientation.

"How many transgender people are there?" I'm often asked this question by people inside and outside of the LGBT community, and by reporters, scholars, students and attorneys. They want to know how many people we are talking about when we refer to the letter "T" in the LGBT. Sometimes, the underlying sentiment is, "Why are we focusing on such a small population of people who seem to have such different issues than us?"

Election Day brought another mixed bag of results for the LGBT community. On one hand, a slim majority in Maine voted to repeal the marriage equality legislation that had the support of both the legislature and the governor. On the other hand, Washington residents voted to retain a statewide domestic partnership law that also had legislative and gubernatorial support.

U.S. Supreme Court Denies Lambda Legal Appeal of Louisiana Birth Certificate Ruling

(Washington, DC, October 11, 2011) – The U.S. Supreme Court today denied Lambda Legal’s petition for a writ of certiorari in the case of a same-sex couple seeking an accurate birth certificate for their Louisiana-born son whom they adopted in New York. The Louisiana state registrar has refused to recognize the adoption and issue a birth certificate listing both fathers as the boy’s parents.

Lambda Legal Mourns the Passing of Former Legal Director Paula Ettelbrick

Paula Ettelbrick, former Legal Director at Lambda Legal and lifelong activist for LGBT equality and social justice, died today, after a long battle with cancer. Ettelbrick was the first staff attorney at Lambda Legal in 1986 and served as its Legal Director from 1988 to 1993.
