The following is an excerpt from the publication's introduction:

Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund provides this booklet to help the many students who are enduring the pain of anti-gay hatred and violence in public schools. It suggests steps for students, parents, family members, educators, and concerned citizens to join others who have begun to fight back against the hatred that causes young lesbians and gay men to attempt suicide at an alarming rate. Lambda has compiled this manual as an important extension to our victory in the first lawsuit to challenge anti-gay abuse in schools.

In the first federal appellate case on anti-gay violence in schools, Lambda successfully represented Jamie Nabozny, who suffered severe anti-gay abuse in his Wisconsin school. He now says that he hopes that his lawsuit might mean that other students will not have to live through the same horrors he experienced.

We dedicate this publication to Jamie Nabozny, who lost an important part of his childhood because of the anti-gay abuse he suffered in school, and who agreed to stand up and fight with Lambda in an effort to make sure that other young people do not have to suffer the way he did.

Arizona Law Hurts Us All

5/5/2010

"The Arizona immigration law is still alive and well... and dangerous, and Lambda Legal's Jon Davidson and Francisco Dueñas says gays and lesbians need to join the fight.

"As LGBT people, we are all too familiar with unjust laws, discriminatory law enforcement, and a hostile legal system. Our country’s immigration system remains plagued with these problems, and Arizona’s shameful new immigration law compounds them in the worst possible ways."

Marriage' benefits costly for gay couples

1/18/2010

"If Howard Wax and Robert Pooley Jr. were a heterosexual couple, they could've gone to their nearest Cook County clerk's office, paid $40 for a marriage license and been wed.

"...Instead, the couple paid $10,000 for an attorney to help them roughly simulate -- using wills, trusts and powers of attorney -- the protections that marriage affords. It was a price the men, parents of 3-year-old twins, were willing to pay for peace of mind, though they admit it's far from perfect.

“Straightening” the Law on "Ex-Gay" Speech

The so-called “ex-gays” are at it again, threatening publicly funded colleges and universities with lawsuits if they don’t promote the notion that lesbian, gay, bisexual and trangender (LGBT) people can be turned straight. Lambda Legal recently learned that Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX) sent a letter to a university this spring, demanding the university feature its “ex-gay” propaganda on the university LGBT center’s website.

Intersection of Law and Policy

by Greg Nevins
Supervising Senior Staff Attorney

Lambda Legal can't fight every battle or react to every misinterpretation of the law uttered by someone hostile to LGBT rights.

So the question of what to do came up when, on March 4, newly-elected Virginia Attorney General Kenneth T. Cuccinelli, II wrote to officials heading Virginia's public universities, urging them to rescind their policies against discrimination based on sexual orientation.
