UPDATE: Following Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez's filing yesterday, Lambda Legal Marriage Project Director Camilla Taylor spoke to the Chicago Tribune: "I've never encountered this before. We've really reached the tipping point, and now the government of Illinois refuses to defend the law because it's indefensible."
The Cook County State's Attorney has filed papers agreeing with our position that barring same-sex couples from marrying violates the Illinois constitution. In reaction to the news, National Marriage Project Director Camilla Taylor said:
"We're glad that Illinois elected officials at every level of state and federal government realize that the marriage ban is indefensible. The 16 couples and their children in our lawsuit are deeply gratified that the Cook County Clerk, the Cook County State's Attorney, and the Attorney General have stepped forward to acknowledge that there is no justification for preventing them from realizing their dream of being part of married families. Today brings us closer to dignity and respect for all of us in Illinois."
