After Indiana Committee Passes SB 101, Lambda Legal Urges Full House to Vote ‘No’ on Religious Discrimination Bill

Today, the Indiana House Judiciary Committee, with a vote of 9-4, passed a bill designed to allow private businesses, individuals and organizations to discriminate against anyone in Indiana on religious grounds. Jennifer Pizer, National Director of Lambda Legal’s Law and Policy Project, issued the following statement condemning the bill’s passage and urging the Indiana House as a whole to vote ‘no’ on Senate Bill 101:

“We are extremely disappointed that Indiana’s House Judiciary Committee voted to facilitate religious discrimination in many areas of life for Indiana’s families, workers and others. Everyone in Indiana deserves respect and inclusion, including same-sex couples and their families, and people of all traditions, backgrounds and faiths. However, in the name of protecting religion, this bill goes way too far. For-profit companies shouldn’t be treated as churches by our government, they should be held to the non-discrimination policies that have protected women, racial minorities, people with disabilities and many other vulnerable groups for decades. We urge the Indiana House to stop this profoundly misguided, dangerous bill before it goes any further.”
