Today, March 31, is the 6th annual International Transgender Day of Visibility, when we celebrate those who have worked to elevate the powerful experiences of transgender people.

“On this Transgender Day of Visibility, I am grateful to each and every transgender person who walks bravely with their head held high,” says Dru Levasseur, Transgender Rights Project National Director for Lambda Legal. “We know the statistics of harassment, discrimination, and violence directed at transgender people, particularly transgender women of color. When we stand tall and visible, we demand the respect we deserve in this world.” According to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, 67% of the homicide victims of anti-LGBTQ hate violence in 2013 were transgender women of color.

This year, Lambda Legal honors Crispin Torres, who has been named to the “Trans 100” list. The Trans 100 is an annual list that recognizes prominent members of the transgender community across the country.

“Crispin is a key member of our community education team, and we are delighted that he has been named as one of the Trans 100,” said Leslie Gabel-Brett, Director of Lambda Legal’s Education and Public Affairs department. “Inclusion on such a respected list reflects Crispin’s leadership and dedication to being a resource for the transgender community.”

Crispin, who has been with Lambda Legal since 2012, has been a principal voice in the organization’s efforts within the transgender community. Crispin has worked on local and statewide efforts in transgender equality, been instrumental in the 2014 Transgender Day of Remembrance in Chicago, and was instrumental in shifting its focus from one of survival to one of resilience.

“I am honored to be named on this list with other exceptional trans leaders,” said Torres. “It is humbling to have my work recognized at the national level, and this accomplishment motivates me to continue to push harder to promote civil rights for all transgender people. We are seeing the original vision of the Trans 100 come to life: that if trans folks begin seeing more folks like themselves out in the world, not just surviving, but thriving, we can flip the script from trans survival to trans empowerment."

The Trans 100 list is released each year on the International Trans Day of Visibility, which occurs on March 31st of every year. The Trans 100 is intended to highlight individuals doing active work for and in the transgender community, especially those working to eliminate ostracism and stigma, reduce poverty, further the social and economic development of the trans community and build infrastructure within the trans community.
