Today, Academy Award winner Julianne Moore joined thousands who have recently said “I DO” – pledging her support to Lambda Legal and the continuing fight for LGBT equality. Her new video, part of the “I DO” campaign, makes clear that the fight for LGBT equality will continue and new battles will emerge, even after the Supreme Court issues its ruling on the freedom to marry this June.
“Whatever the decision, the fight goes on,” Moore said in her touching campaign video. “The fight for LGBT youth who are too often bullied at school. The fight for transgender people who face violence and discrimination. The fight for the right to take care of a loved one when they fall ill. We will keep fighting until all of us are truly equal. We can do better. We must do better.”
Throughout her career, Moore has portrayed characters whose struggles mirror real life issues within the LGBT community – bringing prominence to these often overlooked stories. Off the screen, Moore has been a staunch supporter of LGBT rights for more than 25 years – from work with ACT UP during the early days of the AIDS crisis, to being recognized on the OUT 100 list in 2010 and then joining the New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign in 2011.
“We are thrilled that Julianne Moore has added her powerful voice to the “I DO” campaign,” said Kevin Cathcart, executive director of Lambda Legal. “Ms. Moore is lending her celebrity status to garner attention and greater support for the continued fight for full equality. Her commitment to the cause is energizing - I have no doubt that she will inspire thousands more to join us.”
