Lambda Legal's Camilla Taylor Inducted Into Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame

Lambda Legal Counsel Camilla Taylor was inducted last night into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame.

The honorees were selected by a committee composed of previous inductees, which reviewed nominations submitted by the public. The committee cited Taylor “for her successful prosecution of Lambda Legal’s marriage lawsuit in Iowa and her further work on behalf of the LGBT communities.”

Taylor was the National Marriage Project Director at Lambda Legal from 2010 through 2015. In 2015, the Marriage Project concluded its work as a result of the landmark Supreme Court decision that struck down all laws banning same-sex couples from marriage in the United States and territories.

Taylor was also counsel in Varnum v. Brien, in which the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously struck down the state’s marriage ban in April 2009, making Iowa the third state in the country to permit gay and lesbian couples to marry.

In addition to Taylor, 10 other Chicagoans and one organization were honored at the 25^th annual induction ceremony, held last night at the Chicago History Museum, with Mayor Rahm Emanuel in attendance.

The Hall of Fame honors members and allies of the LGBT communities, as well as nonprofit organizations, who have made “far-reaching or significant long-term contributions to the quality of life of those communities or the city as a whole.”
