Rachel B. Tiven, CEO of Lambda Legal, the nation's oldest and largest legal organization working for the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and people living with HIV, issued the following statement after the Supreme Court stayed a federal court decision to let a transgender student in Virginia, Gavin Grimm, use the same restrooms as other boys at his school.
“We are disappointed by today’s order from the Supreme Court. Every day that transgender young people are being singled out and separated from their peers is a day too long. Lambda Legal and our many partners will continue to fight on every front for equal protection in Virginia and throughout the country, where states continue to discriminate against and stigmatize trans students and LGBT people.”
In October 2015, Lambda Legal, joined by Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP and the Transgender Law Center as co-counsel, filed a friend-of-the-court brief in G.G. v. Gloucester County School Board on behalf of school administrators that have adopted inclusive policies for their transgender students.
