Following Pat McCrory’s concession, yesterday North Carolina Governor-Elect Roy Cooper called upon the legislature to repeal House Bill 2, the state’s sweeping anti-LGBT measure.
Lambda Legal, along with the American Civil Liberties Union and ACLU of North Carolina and the law firm of Jenner & Block, is challenging H.B. 2 in federal court on behalf of four LGBT North Carolinians and the ACLU of North Carolina.
We applaud North Carolina Governor-Elect Roy Cooper’s leadership as he continues to call for the repeal of H.B. 2. Every day that H.B. 2 remains on the books, this shameful law encourages discrimination against tens of thousands of LGBT people who call North Carolina home.
H.B. 2 is not only cruel and insulting, but also directly damaging to LGBT people. This law is about more than restrooms, it’s about access to employment, education and other opportunities. It aims to override local school boards in establishing policies with respect to restrooms and locker rooms.
We are all watching to see what North Carolina does next. Lambda Legal and the ACLU will continue fighting back this law in court, but the General Assembly must do the right thing and repeal H.B. 2 and all of its discriminatory provisions at once and replace it with full non-discrimination protections for all.
