From the Fall 2012 issue of Impact magazine:
[Nick Rhoades] was sentenced to 25 years [in prison] for "exposing" someone to HIV -- even though he practiced safe sex. Now Lambda Legal is appealing his conviction.
Sensationalist headlines and stubborn public ignorance about HIV transmission helped make Rhoades' arrest particularly humiliating, and he suffered a mental breakdown. The young Iowan spent time in an acute psychiatric care facility and then nine months in a maximum-security jail, six weeks of them in solitary confinement.
"To think that for the rest of my life I'll be branded as a felon and sex offender, all because of a one-time safe sex encounter where no HIV was transmitted, is unimaginable," Rhoades said when Rhoades v. Iowa was filed.
The case: Rhoades v. Iowa
