Lambda Legal announced today that it has reached a settlement agreement with Hesperia Unified School District (HUSD) in the lawsuit brought on behalf of Julia Frost, a lesbian teacher who supported LGBTQ students as co-advisor of the students’ Gay-Straight Alliance club while teaching English at Sultana High School.
For the past several years, Lambda Legal has advocated for and filed lawsuits on behalf of students who were denied the right to participate in GLSEN’s Day of Silence.
Lambda Legal filed a lawsuit in California Superior Court today claiming the Hesperia Unified School District and administrators at Sultana High School violated California law by not renewing the contract of an openly lesbian teacher in retaliation for supporting lesbian, gay and gender-nonconforming students' attempts to speak out about the harassment and discrimination directed at them.
