On January 1, Maryland becomes the ninth state to allow same-sex couples the freedom to marry. Lambda Legal congratulates all of the happy couples and their families who have waited so long for this day.

"Today is a brand new day for equality in Maryland," says Susan Sommer, Lambda Legal's Director of Constitutional Litigation, who has been working in Maryland to make sure that married same-sex couples are treated fairly under the law. "We congratulate all the loving Maryland couples who are finally able to celebrate their love in their home state. As married life begins, many couples may have questions about their new legal status, and, indeed, there are many subjects to consider like health insurance arrangements and tax preparation. After the champagne toasts are over, we encourage couples to get answers to these questions and contact us if they run into problems."

Lambda Legal, with Equality Maryland, the ACLU of Maryland and others, is working with the state government to ensure the new law is implemented to achieve full equality for married same-sex couples. Our organizations will be providing answers to FAQs for married same-sex couples. The FAQ will be ready soon, so keep an eye out and return to this page.
