Supreme Court Hears DOMA Case

The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral argument today in United States v. Windsor, the case challenging Section 3 of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which bars the federal government from recognizing the marriages of same-sex couples. 

On consecutive days, we have witnessed lawyers arguing passionately and effectively before the Court for equal rights and protections for same-sex couples. 

The solicitor general explained that Section 3 of DOMA is discrimination, and it is time for the Court to recognize that this discrimination cannot be reconciled with our fundamental commitment to equal protection under the law.
