After news outlets reported that the Puerto Rican government is considering withdrawing its support for the law banning marriage for same-sex couples, Omar Gonzalez-Pagan, Lambda Legal Staff Attorney, issued the following statement:
“Every day that loving, committed couples in Puerto Rico are denied the dignity and respect of marriage represents one more day in which their families are at risk and the Commonwealth sends a discriminatory message to LGBT people. We won’t stop fighting on their behalf.”
Today, Lambda Legal filed a notice of appeal to the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Conde-Vidal v. Garcia-Padilla, after the U. S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico dismissed the lawsuit seeking to end the Commonwealth’s discriminatory ban on marriage for same-sex couples.
Last night, the United States District Court of Puerto Rico issued a ruling dismissing Lambda Legal’s lawsuit seeking to end the discriminatory ban on marriage for same-sex couples in Puerto Rico. The case, Conde-Vidal v. Garcia-Padilla, was filed on behalf of five gay and lesbian couples and Puerto Rico Para Tod@s, an organization that represents lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and transgender people and their families.
