In its end-of-June decision, the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey with its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. At Lambda Legal, we know that this ruling is unequivocally wrong, and it has caused immediate crises for many LGBTQ+ people who need access to abortion. It is no overstatement to say, lives are already at stake.

This is also a clear threat to other essential civil rights of LGBTQ+ people.  The movements for reproductive rights and justice and for LGBTQ+ civil rights more broadly are inextricably linked because at their core, these rights — whether or not to continue a pregnancy, with whom and how to be sexually intimate, and whether to physically align our body with our gender identity — are about personal liberty, autonomy, and self-determination.

It is clear, especially given the Court’s contrived reasoning in Dobbs and alarming statements from Justice Thomas, that LGBTQ+ civil rights battles that we have fought and won, including our very own victories in Lawrence v. Texas and Obergefell v. Hodges, are under threat. This is a crisis point in our movement, and we need to fight back against this dangerous reactionary tide.

How Lambda Legal is responding:

Lambda Legal is the leading organization in LGBTQ+ civil rights law and policy, and we are prepared and well-positioned to meet the reality of this moment. Our team is already hard at work crafting new litigation strategies and building support for federal and state legislation to protect LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV.

We are also leading calls to reform our courts and restore the integrity of our democracy.

We are working closely with the current federal government and many important federal agencies that value LGBTQ+ people and are open, and even eager, to better serve those in our communities. We are also still fighting in state and federal courts coast-to-coast on behalf of LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV, and we are winning.
