Lambda Statement on U.S. Supreme Court Decision to Hear University of Wisconsin Student Fees Dispute

(CHICAGO, March 29, 1999) -- The United States Supreme Court Monday agreed to review a case that threatens to sharply curtail student activities at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and at public colleges and universities nationwide. Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund hailed the move as a sign that the Court may eventually vindicate student speech on these campuses.

NEWS CONFERENCE: THURSDAY, MARCH 18, 2 P.M. PST: Gay Teacher Wins Agreement That Bakersfield School Won't Discriminate

(LOS ANGELES, March 18, 1999) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund announced Thursday that client James Merrick had settled his sexual orientation discrimination case with a California school district. As part of the agreement, the district will apologize for removing 15 students from the award-winning teacher's science classes and will strengthen district non- discrimination policy.


The settlement will be discussed at a news conference with Merrick, Lambda, and the California Teachers Association, on Thursday, March 18, at 2 p.m.

Lambda Urges U.S. Supreme Court to Protect Gay Student Center, Campus Speech

(CHICAGO, March 1, 1999) -- Urging the United States Supreme Court to review a ruling that threatens to silence a gay student support group and limit speech on campuses around the country, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund Monday asked for reversal in a case brought by some Christian conservative law students at the University of Wisconsin.

Lambda is supporting the University's defense of its funding system for campus groups with fees from all students. The case endangers funding systems for campus activities at public universities nationwide.

Gay and Straight Students Seek Injunction Against Salt Lake School Board

(NEW YORK, November 13, 1998) -- In a Utah federal court, an alliance of gay and straight students seeking equal treatment at their school will ask for a preliminary injunction against the Salt Lake City school board, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Friday.

Lambda, as lead counsel, the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah, the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights sued the school board on behalf of the East High Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) and three of its members.

Narrow California Ruling Does Not End Battle Against Anti-Gay Discrimination by Boy Scouts

(LOS ANGELES -- Monday, March 23, 1998) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund deplored Monday's California state Supreme Court ruling, which held that the state's law does not reach anti-gay discrimination by organizations like the Boy Scouts of America.

Lambda, co-counsel in the case, Curran v. Mount Diablo Council of the Boy Scouts of America, emphasized that the court made a narrow ruling that applies only to California and does not stop efforts against the BSA's anti-gay discrimination elsewhere in the country.

High School Students Sue Salt Lake City School Board


(SALT LAKE CITY, March 19, 1998) -- In a lawsuit filed Thursday by four civil rights organizations, a Utah student club called the East High Gay/Straight Alliance challenged discrimination against it by the Salt Lake City Board of Education.

Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund (lead counsel in the case), the ACLU of Utah, the ACLU of Northern California, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights filed the suit on the club's behalf in the United States District Court for the District of Utah.
