(NEW YORK, January 9, 2001) — Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund is urging Nebraska’s highest court to hold a Richardson County sheriff more accountable for his failure to protect a rape victim, who was raped and later killed because of his gender identity.
On Friday, January 12 at 9:00 a.m., the Nebraska Supreme Court will hear argument in Brandon v. Richardson County. Lambda Senior Staff Attorney David S. Buckel and Herbert J. Friedman of Friedman Law Offices will appear on behalf of Joann Brandon, the mother of victim Brandon Teena, and will be available afterwards on the courthouse steps to answer questions from the media.
The importance of the Brandon case to ensuring law enforcement protection for all who may be targeted by bias-related violence is reflected by the 33 civil rights and victims’ advocacy organizations that have joined Lambda in its appeal. Among them are the American Civil Liberties Union, National Organization for Women, Southern Poverty Law Center, Parents of Murdered Children, National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, American Public Health Association, and the Anti-Defamation League.
