Monday, May 6: Annual Liberty Awards to be presented at gala dinner
March 5, 2002

(NEW YORK, March 5, 2002) — For its 16th annual Liberty Awards, Lambda Legal honors Mark Bingham, whose courage in the face of death saved lives on September 11, the award-winning television documentary series “In The Life,” and Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and novelist Anna Quindlen.

On Monday, May 6, Lambda Legal will have its 16th annual Liberty Awards gala dinner at The Regent, 55 Wall Street from 6:00-10:00 p.m. Mark Bingham’s mother, Alice Hoglan, will be present to accept his posthumous award.

Mark Bingham, honored by the Advocate magazine as “Person of the Year,” heroically served his country as one of the passengers on United Flight 93 who resisted an assault by hijackers and crashed their flight into an empty field, avoiding its likely target of a major government building.

“In the Life,” now celebrating its tenth year on the air, is the only nationally televised newsmagazine that focuses on the history and contemporary experiences of the lesbian and gay community. This award-winning cultural news program is shown on 130 public television stations in 31 states.

Anna Quindlen in the past 25 years has appeared in America’s most influential newspapers and widely read magazines, plus authored best-seller books. As a columnist for The New York Times, she won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1992. Since 1999, she has been writing Newsweek’s prominent “Last Word” column.

The Lambda Legal Liberty Awards Dinner celebrates the outstanding leadership and civil rights activism on behalf of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, the transgendered, and people with HIV or AIDS. The Dinner also will celebrate Kevin Cathcart’s ten years as Executive Director of Lambda Legal.
