Lambda Legal Holds Forum on Sexual Orientation and HIV Status Issues Relating to Immigration

(Dallas, March 21, 2007) — Lambda Legal Senior Staff Attorney Ken Upton and Lambda Legal’s Proyecto Igualdad Outreach Associate, Francisco Dueñas, will address community members and interested case workers on legal matters concerning HIV and immigration, sexual orientation and immigration, and civil rights issues affecting people living with HIV.
“We’ve fielded many questions since Lambda Legal secured asylum for Jorge Soto Vega,” said Dennis Coleman, Regional Director of Lambda Legal’s South Central Regional Office in Dallas, referring to the gay Mexican immigrant for whom Lambda Legal recently secured asylum in the United States. “Lambda Legal put together Wednesday’s forum to help answer questions about sexual orientation and immigration, HIV status and immigration and other civil rights issues that people living with HIV encounter.”

Why: On January 30, Lambda Legal secured asylum for a man who had suffered death threats and beatings from police and others in his native Mexico because he is gay. This forum will answer some of the questions that the community has expressed in relation to the case: Soto Vega v. Gonzales.
