(New York August 3, 2018) – Today, Lambda Legal announced that Rachel B. Tiven, CEO, will resign. Lambda Legal’s Board of Directors released the following statement:

Rachel B. Tiven has resigned as CEO of Lambda Legal to work on the 2018 midterm elections.

Rachel came to Lambda to make big changes in the organization. She has transformed the organization in ways large and small, and has helped position Lambda as a leader fighting the assault on our rights by the Trump administration. The organization is stronger than ever, with a supercharged communications team, our first Washington, D.C. office, real diversity in leadership and a growing donor base.

With Justice Kennedy’s retirement and Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination, so much of what Lambda is fighting for rests on what happens in Congress. Rachel will be joining the Leadership Now Project, and spending the next crucial months helping save our democracy at the ballot box. We respect her decision and appreciate her work at Lambda Legal.

Lambda has a big Fall ahead. We’ve already sued Trump - and won. And we have multiple cases pending at the federal and state level that are critical to the rights of LGBT people and people living with HIV/AIDS. The staff has always been Lambda Legal’s greatest asset and we are fully focused on the work, moving ahead full-speed.

The Executive Committee and Board will be communicating about interim leadership and next steps shortly.

Lambda Legal CEO Rachel B. Tiven said:

“I was hired at Lambda with a mandate to make big changes. I am proud of how much we’ve accomplished, and proud of how Lambda has responded to the assault on our rights posed by the Trump administration. Ultimately, though, with Justice Kennedy’s retirement and Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination, so much of what Lambda is fighting for rests on what happens in Congress. I’ll be joining the Leadership Now Project, and spending the next crucial months helping save our democracy at the ballot box.

“I’m grateful for the experience I’ve had at Lambda, and will remain a strong supporter and donor. We need Lambda Legal more than ever, and I’ll be rooting for them.”
