In a 5-4 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court today blocked the Trump administration’s effort to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, an Obama administration program that protects some 700,000 immigrants brought to the United States as children from deportation.
Today’s decision blocking the Trump administration’s attempt to tear apart immigrant families is wonderful news, and we celebrate with the thousands of DACA recipients who have relied on the program to live and be safe in this country. But the work continues to ensure all immigrants are protected from multiple harmful actions by this administration, which has once again been rebuked by the Supreme Court for its failure to follow the rule of law. Immigrant families are part of every community, including the LGBTQ community, and Lambda Legal will continue to resist the racist and xenophobic immigration policies of this administration. We will keep pushing for comprehensive and compassionate reform to our immigration system as whole.
An estimated 75,000 LGBTQ immigrants are eligible for DACA. DACA has helped thousands of LGBTQ immigrants from all over the world who have lived, worked, studied and contributed to our country and, if sent home, would face harassment, violence, or the criminalization of their very existence resulting in imprisonment or death. This decision will literally save lives.
While this decision is a huge win, the threat has not passed and Dreamers are still left in legal limbo. Lambda Legal joins the call for the Senate to pass and the President to sign the American Dream and Promise Act, which was blocked by the Senate a year ago.”
