Lambda Takes on Texas Anti-Gay Sodomy Law

(NEW YORK, November 20, 1998) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said outside a Houston court Friday that it will challenge the Texas "Homosexual Conduct" law in defense of two men arrested in a private home on charges of engaging in consensual sex.


Lambda Staff Attorney Suzanne B. Goldberg, after the arraignment hearing in The State of Texas v. Lawrence and The State of Texas v. Garner, said that the national organization for lesbian and gay civil rights will seek to strike down the Texas sodomy law that the men are charged with violating.

Religious and Civil Rights Groups Support Same-Sex Couples in Legal Battle to Marry

(San Francisco, California, January 10, 2006) In eight amicus briefs filed Monday with the California Court of Appeal, more than more than 250 religious and civil rights organizations urged the court to put an end to state laws that deny same-sex couples the protections of marriage. The Court is hearing the State’s appeal of the March 2005 decision by San Francisco Superior Court Judge Richard Kramer, which held that California’s current statutory ban on marriage of same-sex couples violates the California Constitution.

Gay and Straight Students Seek Injunction Against Salt Lake School Board

(NEW YORK, November 13, 1998) -- In a Utah federal court, an alliance of gay and straight students seeking equal treatment at their school will ask for a preliminary injunction against the Salt Lake City school board, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Friday.

Lambda, as lead counsel, the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah, the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights sued the school board on behalf of the East High Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) and three of its members.

Ohio Court to Hear Lesbian Second-Parent Adoption Case

(CHICAGO, November 9, 1998) An Ohio appellate court is set to consider its first lesbian second-parent adoption case, which could provide better protections for an eight-year-old girl and eventually for children of many other lesbian and gay parents, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Monday.

On Tuesday, November 10, the Ohio Court of Appeals will hear arguments in In re: Adoption of Jane Doe. Patricia Logue, managing attorney of Lambda's Midwest Regional Office, will argue on behalf of the mothers, "Trish Smith" and "Marcia Jones."

ACLU and Lambda Legal Challenge Law Barring Transgender People Access to Medical Treatment in Prison
