Lambda Seeks Regional Director for Chicago Office

(CHICAGO, October 2, 1998) -- In an effort to keep up with growing demand in an eight-state region, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Friday that it will be expanding its Chicago-based staff by hiring a Midwest Regional Director.

U.S. Supreme Court to Consider Last Remaining Anti-Gay Ballot Initiative

(CHICAGO, September 28, 1998) -- The most decisive United States Supreme Court triumph ever for lesbian and gay civil rights should bring final defeat for Cincinnati's Issue 3, the country's last anti-gay ballot initiative, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Monday.

The High Court is likely to announce soon its response to Lambda's petition for the Court either to hear the challenge to Issue 3, Equality Foundation of Greater Cincinnati v. City of Cincinnati, or to overturn the anti-gay initiative without argument.

Second Circuit Court of Appeals Upholds 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

(NEW YORK, September 23, 1998) -- The American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Wednesday that a federal appeals court, deferring to military authority, upheld "don't ask, don't tell."

A three-judge panel of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously ruled in Able v. USA that courts owe total deference to Congress regarding military policies and that "don't ask, don't tell" was not in violation of the First Amendment nor the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution.

Lambda Adds Firepower

(NEW YORK, September 18, 1998) -- The nation's oldest and largest gay legal advocacy group just got bigger. Marvin C. Peguese and Doni Gewirtzman have joined the national headquarters of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund as staff attorneys, bringing the total number of lawyers throughout Lambda's offices in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta to 16.
