For First Time, NY Federal Judge Strikes Down Entire Law Barring Gays From Military Service

(NEW YORK, July 2, 1997) -- In the first full defeat of the military's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' statute, a federal judge in New York today struck down the law, saying it unconstitutionally imposes special rules on gay troops.

U.S. Judge Eugene Nickerson of the Eastern District of New York rejected both the conduct and speech portions of the law, ruling that they violate the Constitution's equal protection guarantee and serve no purpose but to placate the fears of some heterosexual troops.

Lambda Legal Files Lawsuit on Behalf of Woman Whose Job Offer Was Revoked Because She is Transgender

(Houston, Texas, December 18, 2006) — Today, Lambda Legal has filed papers in federal court in the Southern District of Texas on behalf of a transgender woman whose employment offer was rescinded because she is transgender.


“When the HR Director found out the company offered a job to a transgender person, the offer was rescinded,” said Cole Thaler, Transgender Rights Attorney at Lambda Legal. “Even though Izza was the best applicant for the job, the company decided that it didn’t want a transgender employee and claimed that she ‘misrepresented’ herself.”

Ohio Appeals Court Declares Sexual Orientation Irrelevant in Custody Battles

(CHICAGO, June 20, 1997) -- An Ohio state appeals court declared that a gay father should not have lost custody of his son, ruling that sexual orientation has no significance in child custody decisions, said Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund Friday.
