Will County Court Officials Defy Rules in Transgender Woman's Case: Lambda Legal Asks State High Court to Enforce Them

(Springfield, IL, January 17, 2008) — In papers to be filed today at the Illinois Supreme Court, Lambda Legal asked the state high court to compel the Chief Judge and the Circuit Court Clerk of the Twelfth Judicial Circuit in Will County, to follow proper court procedure so Daunn Turner, a low-income, disabled transgender woman, can continue the process to legally change her name.

California Supreme Court Rejects Challenge to Property Tax Protections for Domestic Partnerships

(San Francisco, CA, January 3, 2008) — Today, in a major victory for same-sex couples, the California Supreme Court denied a petition by county assessors seeking review of a California Court of Appeal decision affirming the validity of basic property tax protections for domestic partners. The Court's decision means that the validity of these protections is now secure. No further appeals are possible.

Lambda Legal Challenges Denial of Rights of Transgender Student to Wear Dress to Prom

(Gary, IN, December, 12, 2007) — In court papers filed today in the Northern District Court of Indiana, Lambda Legal says that West Side High School violated K.K. Logan's First Amendment rights when it barred her from her prom for wearing a dress.

K.K. Logan, then identifying as gender-non-conforming gay male, attended West Side High during her junior and senior year and expressed a deeply rooted femininity in her appearance and demeanor. Both classmates and teachers at the school supported her in her daily attendance dressed in clothes typically associated with girls her age.

Lambda Legal Speaks Out Against Proposed Regulations That Place Unfair Restrictions on HIV Positive Visitors to the U.S.

(New York, December 10, 2007) — Lambda Legal is opposing regulations proposed by the Department of Homeland Security on Issuance of a Visa and Authorization for Temporary Admission into the United States for Certain Nonimmigrant Aliens Infected with HIV. The suggested regulations continue the stigmatizing discrimination against persons living with HIV, create greater barriers to their entry into the United States and significantly curtail their legal rights once here.

ACLU and Lambda Legal Challenge Law Barring Transgender People Access to Medical Treatment in Prison

(Milwaukee, WI, January 24, 2006) — Lambda Legal and the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit today in federal court on behalf of two transgender women challenging a Wisconsin law that bars them from access to appropriate medical treatment while they are incarcerated.
