New Toolkit Tackles Homophobia in 'Abstinence-Only' Education, Equips Communities to Fight for Real Sex Ed

(NEW YORK, Monday, September 9, 2002) - Citing an increase in public school districts replacing sex education with programs that teach that sex is only acceptable for people who are heterosexual and married, Lambda Legal today released a first-of-its-kind toolkit to help youth, parents and community members make sure their local school district is teaching accurate and inclusive sex education. In the new school year, public school districts in 49 states will teach these so-called “abstinence only” programs, according to Lambda Legal.

Lambda Announces New Director of Midwest Regional Office

Government Keeps Door Open to Support for Lesbian and Gay Survivors of 9/11 Victims

Press Conference to Announce Establishment of 'September 11 Gay & Lesbian Family Fund'

(NEW YORK, December 11, 2001) — On Thursday, December 13, the Empire State Pride Agenda and the Stonewall Community Foundation will announce the establishment of the "September 11 Gay & Lesbian Family Fund" to assist the surviving partners of gay and lesbian individuals killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks. With $140,000 in donations, the fund will be administered by the New York Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project, and will be divided equally among the estimated three-dozen surviving partners.

Red Cross Issues Guidelines on Relief Assistance to Lesbian and Gay Survivors of September 11

(NEW YORK, December 4, 2001) — Today, the Empire State Pride Agenda, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, and the New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti Violence Project praised the American Red Cross for issuing an official policy of fair treatment for gay and lesbian families suffering from the loss of a loved one on September 11.

The new Red Cross guidelines were issued in response to a meeting last month with the three organizations seeking assurances that relief assistance would include the partners and children of gay and lesbian victims.

Michigan School District Reprimanded for Ordering Teachers to Dismantle Gay History Month Display
