Long-Time Litigator in Lesbian, Gay Civil Rights Leaves Lambda Legal Defense

(NEW YORK, June 22, 2000) —After nearly a decade of service, Suzanne B. Goldberg, one of the nation’s most experienced litigators in lesbian and gay civil rights, is departing the nation’s oldest and largest legal organization for lesbians, gay men and people with HIV. An attorney for Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund since 1991, Goldberg has played a pivotal role in the organization’s efforts to overturn sodomy laws, enforce fair immigration rules, defend domestic partner programs, and secure workplace protections.

California Department of Industrial Relations Vindicates Lesbian Teacher

(LOS ANGELES, June 20, 2000) — Another California school district has been ordered to stop transferring students from a gay teacher’s classroom because such action is a form of employment discrimination, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Tuesday.


The California Department of Industrial Relations (CDIR) upheld an earlier administrative ruling against Hemet Unified School District for granting a parent’s request to remove a high school student from a tenth grade English class because the teacher is a lesbian.

Insurance Company Rebuffed for Denying Benefits to Policyholders with AIDS

Texas Court Overturns 'Homosexual Conduct' Law, Clears Men Arrested in Bedroom

(NEW YORK, June 8, 2000) —The Texas Court of Appeals Thursday overturned the state’s anti-gay “Homosexual Conduct” Law, reversing convictions of two Houston men arrested for allegedly having sex in the bedroom of one man’s home, said Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, which challenged the law and represented the pair.


In a teleconference at 10 a.m. CDT, Thursday, June 8, Lambda Staff Attorney Suzanne B. Goldberg, with Lambda Cooperating Attorney Mitchell Katine of the Houston law firm Williams, Birnberg & Anderson, will discuss the ruling.
