Lambda Legal Joins Brief in Support of U. of Texas Use of Race to Advance Admissions Diversity

Late yesterday, Lambda Legal joined the National Women’s Law Center and other allied organizations in filing a friend-of-the-court brief in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, a case pending at the U.S. Supreme Court for the second time challenging the use of race in undergraduate admissions decisions.

Lambda Legal Sues U.S. State Department on Behalf of Intersex Citizen Denied Passport

Lambda Legal today filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against the U.S. State Department on behalf of an intersex client, Dana Zzyym, denied a U.S. passport because Dana could not accurately choose either male or female on the passport application form, and the form does not provide any other gender marker designation.

Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe a wide range of natural bodily variations. Intersex people are born with sex characteristics that do not fit typical binary notions of bodies designated “male” or “female.” In some cases, intersex traits are visible at birth, while in others they are not apparent until puberty. Some intersex variations may not be visibly apparent at all.

Victory! Gay Widower Wins Florida Property Tax Battle

At a hearing today, the Miami-Dade County Office of Property Appraisal agreed to reinstate the spousal homestead protections of Lambda Legal client Hal Birchfield, a gay widower previously denied protections against certain tax increases for the home he had shared with his husband because his marriage was not recognized at the time of his husband’s death.
