Lambda Legal filed a federal lawsuit in the US District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia on behalf of two same-sex couples seeking the freedom to marry. The case was filed on behalf of Casie McGee and Sarah Adkins and Justin Murdock and Will Glavaris, both of Huntington, and Nancy Michael and Jane Fenton and their son Drew, of St. Albans.
Here's Casie and Sarah's story:
Casie Mcgee, 30, and Sarah Adkins, 32, of Huntington, have been in a loving committed relationship for more than three years. Both life-long West Virginians, Casie is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Mountwest Community and Technical College in Huntington and Sarah is currently an anthropology student at Marshall University. The marriage ban strains the couple’s finances and causes them to feel stress and uncertainty about the future. Casie, a public employee, cannot provide Sarah, who has diabetes, with spousal health insurance coverage. Because Sarah had no health insurance, when she required treatment at the emergency room for elevated blood sugar, she and Casie were required to pay for the services out of pocket.
