On this Mothers’ Day, I find it particularly offensive that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has decided that it is completely uninterested in collecting data about the needs of LGBTQ older Americans.
Lambda Legal today announced it has joined a lawsuit against a Picayune, MS, funeral home for refusing to provide any service for Robert Huskey after his death, leaving his 82-year-old husband, Jack Zawadski, desperate to make other arrangements in the hours after his beloved spouse’s passing. The suit seeks damages for breach of contract, negligent misrepresentation, and the intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress.
The 2020 census won’t include questions about sexual orientation and gender identity. The harm to LGBTQ people from being erased is not just about numbers (although those are certainly important). Census information helps determine the allocation of federally funded social services that are critically important to so many members of the LGBTQ community.
