Ahead of GLSEN's National Day of Silence—when thousands of students across the country take a stand against bullying in support of LGBT students—we are reminded of the many LGBT youth who feel like they do not have a voice because of the bullying and discrimination they experience in school.

I’ve always been treated differently by other kids at my school. From an early age, I was bullied by other students for being different. In fact, other kids were making fun of me for being a lesbian even before I came out to myself.  Because of the bullying, I feel like I have to be on guard all the time. And it’s hard to pay attention in school when other students are throwing spitballs at me.

Last year on GLSEN’s Day of Silence, I went to school wearing a T-shirt that read, “Jesus is Not a Homophobe.” The shirt is a representation of my identity – I’m gay. Wearing the shirt was a statement, yes. But at first, my school told me I wasn’t allowed to wear it, and threatened me with suspension if I did.

April 12, 2019 is the National Day of Silence, a student-led action sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) in which thousands of students around the country will remain silent for all or part of the school day to call attention to the harassment and discrimination faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.

Over the years, GLSEN and Lambda Legal have heard from hundreds of students, parents and allies who have encountered resistance from their schools and school officials in response to their efforts to participate in Day of Silence activities. The purpose of this FAQ is to provide information about the rights of students to participate in the Day of Silence and what to do if school officials interfere with those rights.

The law, known as SB 1172, prohibits state-licensed mental health providers from using dangerous efforts to change the sexual orientation of minors.

Lambda Legal has been seeking an end to the Boy Scouts' discriminatory ban against openly gay and bisexual members and leaders for more than 20 years, all the way to the Supreme Court.

Lambda Legal honors the life and legacy of Jeanne Manford, the founder of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and pioneer of the straight ally movement, who died yesterday at age 92.
