Lambda Legal filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) on behalf of a couple who were denied the opportunity even to apply to serve as foster parents for refugee children by a USCCB affiliate because, they were told, they did not “mirror the Holy Family.”
Lambda Legal joined other civil rights organizations in submitting an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Lambda Legal, joined by the Human Rights Campaign, National Center for Lesbian Rights, National LGBTQ Task Force, and PFLAG, filed a friend-of-the-court brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), a challenge to unions’ ability to collect “fair share” fees from workers who, while not themselves part of the union, nevertheless benefit from union representation.
The case raises the question of whether the marital presumption of parentage applies to same-sex spouses. It involves a dispute between a married same-sex couple regarding whether the non-biological mother, L.C., is a legal parent to their child and thus responsible for paying child support. Lambda Legal is representing the biological mother, M.G., who gave birth to a child conceived through assisted reproduction during the couple’s marriage.
Lambda Legal filed friend-of-the-court briefs supporting Charlie Craig and David Mullins, a gay couple, urging the Colorado appellate courts and the U.S. Supreme Court to affirm that the owner of a bakery violated Colorado’s anti-discrimination law when he refused to sell a wedding cake to Charlie and Dave because he claimed it was against his religion to help same-sex couples celebrate their marriages. Our briefs documented the widespread, harmful nature of anti-LGBTQ discrimination in Colorado and nationwide.
Lambda Legal filed a lawsuit against Oswego County and the Oswego County Department of Social Services (DSS) on behalf of Sean Simonson, a retired transgender county employee.
Lambda Legal and co-counsel Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of three married couples against Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and the City of Houston to preserve health coverage and other benefits for the same-sex spouses of city employees. These benefits are suddenly at risk after two taxpayers convinced the Texas Supreme Court that Texas cities could defy Obergefell v. Hodges -- the United States Supreme Court case that made marriage equality the law of the land -- and deny married same-sex couples the rights of marriage.
Lambda Legal filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana on behalf of William "Liam” Pierce, after the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s office rescinded a job offer as a Sheriff’s Deputy because he is a person living with HIV.
Lambda Legal asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case of Jameka Evans, a Savannah security guard who was harassed at work and forced from her job because she is a lesbian. The petition seeks a nationwide ruling that sexual orientation discrimination violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
Lambda Legal joined Barber v. Bryant, the federal challenge to HB 1523, Mississippi’s discriminatory anti-LGBT legislation, which was brought by Mississippi civil rights attorney Robert McDuff and the Mississippi Center for Justice.
Lambda Legal joined allied religious and civil-rights organizations and members of the clergy in submitting an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court. The brief argues that President Donald Trump’s Muslim ban is an unconstitutional violation of religious freedom because it singles out one group of people – Muslims – for disfavor based solely on their religion.
