Court Tosses Case Challenging Alaska Fair Housing Law

(LOS ANGELES, August 4, 2000) — Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund Friday applauded a federal court’s decision to dismiss a case brought by two Alaska landlords seeking exemption from any ban on marital status discrimination should an unmarried couple ever apply as tenants. The landlords claimed complying with the law would offend their religious beliefs.

In a First-of-Its-Kind Example, Lambda Legal Announces Settlement Agreement that Lays Groundwork for Civil Rights Safeguards in Public Funding of Faith Based Organizations

(Washington, DC, November 5, 2003) - As the nation debates the new wave of government funding of faith-based social services, Lambda Legal today announced a lawsuit settlement requiring civil rights safeguards when faith-based organizations receive taxpayer dollars to provide social services.

The terms of the settlement dictate that faith-based organizations providing publicly funded child welfare social services in Georgia must do so without infringing on the rights of employees, taxpayers, recipients of services or religious groups.

Mexican Gay Man Wins Right to Flee Homeland

(LOS ANGELES, August 24, 2000) — After being repeatedly beaten and assaulted in his Mexican homeland, a 21-year-old gay man on Thursday at last won his battle to seek asylum in the United States, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said.

The unanimous decision from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals orders the U.S. government to grant asylum to Geovanni Hernandez-Montiel. Previously, an immigration board rejected Hernandez-Montiel’s asylum claim, reasoning that the persecution he faced was due to his effeminate appearance, not his sexual orientation.

Damages in Boys Dont Cry Murder Argued Before Nebraska Supreme Court

(NEW YORK, January 11, 2001) - Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund is urging Nebraska's highest court to hold a Richardson County sheriff more accountable for his failure to protect a rape victim, who was raped and later killed because of his gender identity. Born female and named Teena Brandon, the victim was living as a man in Falls City, Nebraska, when he was murdered at age 21.

Illinois Judicial Panel Files Complaint Against Judge for Blocking Gay Adoptions

(CHICAGO, February 5, 2001) — The Judicial Inquiry Board of Illinois issued an eight-count complaint Monday against a Cook County judge for allowing her anti-gay biases to interfere with adoptions sought by two lesbian families. The inquiry board will prosecute the complaint and seek appropriate sanctions before the Illinois Courts Commission.
