Lambda Legal, the American Civil Liberties Union, and ACLU-WV issued the following statement in response to the latest attack on transgender youth in the state, the West Virginia Attorney General’s announcement that the state will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review the recent U.S. Court of Appeals ruling allowing Becky Pepper-Jackson to participate in team sports pending her appeal.

Today, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit heard oral argument in an appeal brought by West Virginia seeking to reverse a district court decision requiring the State's Medicaid program to treat transgender people’s healthcare needs equally.  

Taking away the freedom of families of transgender youth to seek critical healthcare, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed into law a ban on all forms of gender-affirming care for transgender people under 18 — putting the government in charge of making vital decisions traditionally reserved to parents in Tennessee. The law takes effect on July 1, 2023.  

The settlement will provide $4,000 in compensation to 93 low-income Californians whose HIV status may have been accessed in a potential breach under a state-run medication program.
