Mississippi’s Anti-LGBT Law Reaches Fifth Circuit: Lambda Legal Joins Legal Advocates Filing Opening Briefs

Bryant, the federal challenge brought by Mississippi civil rights attorney Robert McDuff and the Mississippi Center for Justice to HB 1523, Mississippi’s discriminatory anti-LGBT legislation that was enacted in defiance of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision granting marriage for same-sex couples nationwide.

Lambda Legal Echoes Call to Repeal H.B. 2 by North Carolina Governor-Elect Roy Cooper

Following Pat McCrory’s concession, yesterday North Carolina Governor-Elect Roy Cooper called upon the legislature to repeal House Bill 2, the state’s sweeping anti-LGBT measure. Lambda Legal, along with the American Civil Liberties Union and ACLU of North Carolina and the law firm of Jenner & Block, is challenging H.B. 2 in federal court on behalf of four LGBT North Carolinians and the ACLU of North Carolina.

Lambda Legal Fights in Federal Court for Math Instructor Fired for Being Gay

(Chicago, IL, November 30, 2016) – Today, the full 11-member Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in the case of Lambda Legal client, Kimberly Hively, a lesbian math teacher who was repeatedly denied promotions and ultimately fired from her job after it became known that she was a lesbian. The case, Hively v. Ivy Tech Community College, has potential to change the landscape and protect LGBT employees across the country.

The school’s new rule – which reversed a longstanding, effective and inclusive restroom practice in the district – has sparked outrage nationwide and led three transgender students to file a lawsuit against the school district in federal court last month.

Lambda Legal Joins Lawsuit Filed on Behalf of Healthcare Worker Fired for Being HIV Positive

(Austin, TX, November 29, 2016) – Lambda Legal today announced it will seek to join a federal discrimination lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against a Texas nursing facility that fired an employee after he disclosed he was living with HIV. Lambda Legal represented the employee, Michael Janssen, a certified nursing assistant, in his original complaint filed with the EEOC against Granite Mesa Health Center in Marble Falls, Texas. The EEOC issued a probable cause determination in August, 2015.
