Workers Do Not Forfeit ADA Protections by Seeking Disability Benefits

(NEW YORK, May 24, 1999) -- The United States Supreme Court, in the first of several decisions this term affecting people with HIV and AIDS, ruled unanimously Monday that workers with disabilities do not automatically lose employment discrimination protections if they apply for Social Security disability benefits.

High Court Rules that Schools Cannot Ignore Sexual Harassment Among Students

(NEW YORK, May 24, 1999) -— The United States Supreme Court ruled Monday that schools that willfully ignore sexual harassment of one student by another can be held liable for violating federal civil rights law. Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund praised the 5-4 decision, noting that abuse of lesbian and gay students often involves sexual harassment from their peers.

(ATLANTA, May 13, 1999) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund has asked a Georgia judge to allow an Atlanta Councilmember to join the fight against the State Insurance Commissioner's ban on insurance companies' selling policies with domestic partner health coverage.

Challenge to Arkansas Sodomy Law Reaches States Highest Court

(NEW YORK, May 10, 1999) -- As sodomy laws topple state by state, the Arkansas Supreme Court will hear a case challenging a ban against the private, consensual sexual activities of lesbians and gay men, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Friday.

On Thursday, May 13, Lambda Senior Staff Attorney Suzanne B. Goldberg, on behalf of six lesbian and gay Arkansans challenging the sodomy law, will urge the Arkansas Supreme Court to reject efforts to have the case, Bryant v. Picado, thrown out of court.
