Lambda Takes on Texas Anti-Gay Sodomy Law

(NEW YORK, November 20, 1998) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said outside a Houston court Friday that it will challenge the Texas "Homosexual Conduct" law in defense of two men arrested in a private home on charges of engaging in consensual sex.


Lambda Staff Attorney Suzanne B. Goldberg, after the arraignment hearing in The State of Texas v. Lawrence and The State of Texas v. Garner, said that the national organization for lesbian and gay civil rights will seek to strike down the Texas sodomy law that the men are charged with violating.

Lambda Helps Student Groups Defend Free Speech and Funding

(CHICAGO, November 19, 1998) -- Three University of Minnesota student organizations, already targeted by a religious conservative lawsuit to de-fund them, first must fight simply to be heard in their own defense in court, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Tuesday.

Gay and Straight Students Seek Injunction Against Salt Lake School Board

(NEW YORK, November 13, 1998) -- In a Utah federal court, an alliance of gay and straight students seeking equal treatment at their school will ask for a preliminary injunction against the Salt Lake City school board, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Friday.

Lambda, as lead counsel, the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah, the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights sued the school board on behalf of the East High Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) and three of its members.

Ohio Court to Hear Lesbian Second-Parent Adoption Case

(CHICAGO, November 9, 1998) An Ohio appellate court is set to consider its first lesbian second-parent adoption case, which could provide better protections for an eight-year-old girl and eventually for children of many other lesbian and gay parents, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Monday.

On Tuesday, November 10, the Ohio Court of Appeals will hear arguments in In re: Adoption of Jane Doe. Patricia Logue, managing attorney of Lambda's Midwest Regional Office, will argue on behalf of the mothers, "Trish Smith" and "Marcia Jones."

Hawaii, Alaska Election Results Dont Stop Freedom to Marry Movement

(NEW YORK, November 4, 1998) — Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund on Wednesday said it is disappointed but not defeated by Hawaii voters' approval of an unprecedented constitutional amendment aimed at blocking lesbian and gay couples from civil marriage. A similar measure was also approved in Alaska.

U.S. Supreme Court Declines Review of Last Remaining Anti-Gay Ballot Initiative

(CHICAGO, October 13, 1998) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Tuesday that the United States Supreme Court's refusal to review Cincinnati's Issue 3, which prohibits "protected status" for lesbians and gay men, leaves Cincinnatians to battle further over the reach of the controversial measure, but has no implications beyond that case.

Lambda Helps Gay Cops Strike Blow Against Anti-Gay Policy

(NEW YORK, October 5, 1998) -- In an important victory for lesbian and gay law enforcement personnel and the Puerto Rican gay community, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Monday that a federal judge has struck down a disciplinary rule that absolutely prohibits Puerto Rico police officers from associating with lesbians and gay men.

Lambda Seeks Regional Director for Chicago Office

(CHICAGO, October 2, 1998) -- In an effort to keep up with growing demand in an eight-state region, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Friday that it will be expanding its Chicago-based staff by hiring a Midwest Regional Director.

Lambda's Midwest Regional Office (MRO) has done extensive gay rights and HIV-related litigation in areas such as adoption, school safety, access to health care and insurance, employment discrimination and free speech.

U.S. Supreme Court to Consider Last Remaining Anti-Gay Ballot Initiative

(CHICAGO, September 28, 1998) -- The most decisive United States Supreme Court triumph ever for lesbian and gay civil rights should bring final defeat for Cincinnati's Issue 3, the country's last anti-gay ballot initiative, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Monday.

The High Court is likely to announce soon its response to Lambda's petition for the Court either to hear the challenge to Issue 3, Equality Foundation of Greater Cincinnati v. City of Cincinnati, or to overturn the anti-gay initiative without argument.
