Lambda to Sue Reno School Officials for Failing to Protect Gay Student

(LOS ANGELES, January 27, 2000) — Opening a new front in the struggle to stop widespread mistreatment of lesbian and gay students in public schools, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Thursday that it is suing school administrators in Reno, Nevada, for allowing years of merciless abuse to drive a gay student from completing high school.

Gay-Straight Student Club Seeks Injunction Against School Officials

(Orange, CA, January 21, 2000) – To win equal treatment and recognition of their Gay-Straight Alliance club, students from El Modena High School will ask a federal judge for a preliminary injunction ordering Orange County school officials to allow the student group to meet and have equal access to school facilities as its lawsuit continues.

On Monday, January 24, attorneys for the students will argue the motion before United States District Judge David O. Carter. The students’ parents and attorneys will speak with reporters following the hearing.

Lambda Back in Court for LAPD Lewd Conduct Arrest Records

(LOS ANGELES, January 20, 2000) — Concerned that the Los Angeles Police Department continues to target gay men with discriminatory law enforcement tactics, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund sued the agency Thursday for the release of lewd conduct arrest records it is vigorously resisting from making public.

High Court Refuses Appeal by HIV+ Inmates Segregated in Alabama Prisons

(NEW YORK, January 18, 2000) — Against the advice of national public health groups, the United States Supreme Court has declined to hear a case brought by HIV-positive inmates challenging their complete segregation by Alabama prison officials, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Tuesday.

Boy Scout's Anti-Gay Ban to be Reviewed by U.S. Supreme Court

(NEW YORK, January 14, 2000) -- The United States Supreme Court Friday agreed to hear the Boy Scouts of America's appeal of a New Jersey ruling that struck down the group's ban on gay members and leaders, a move Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said could shed more light on the organization's discriminatory policy nationwide.

U.S. Supreme Court Declines to Hear HIV Insurance Caps Case

(CHICAGO, January 10, 2000) — The United States Supreme Court Monday declined to review a case that seeks to clarify that the Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits insurance companies from imposing disease-specific caps that limit health coverage for policyholders with HIV or other disabilities.

Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund and the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago said the practice, which has no basis in actuarial principles, violates the ADA and jeopardizes healthcare for many people with HIV and other illnesses.

Lambda Urges Stay of Execution for African-American Lesbian

(NEW YORK, January 10, 2001) — Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund on Wednesday called on Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating to stay the execution of Wanda Jean Allen, an African-American lesbian and one of several gay inmates on death row despite improprieties during their trials, including anti-gay bias.
