Indiana Advocate Krisztina Inskeep to be Honored with Lambda Legal’s 2017 Leadership Award

(Indianapolis, August 28, 2017) — On Friday, September 22, Lambda Legal will honor Krisztina Inskeep at its Indiana Benefit, the largest annual LGBTQ civil rights event in the state. Every year, Lambda Legal gives special honors to a leader whose work advances the civil rights for LGBTQ people and everyone living with HIV in the Hoosier state. This year Lambda Legal is proud to honor Krisztina Inskeep with the Indiana Benefit’s 2017 Leadership Award.

Lambda Legal Hails Signature of Important Bills in Illinois That Protect and Affirm LGBTI People

(Chicago, IL, August 25, 2017) – Today, House Bill 1785, which updates the Illinois Vital Records Act to make it easier for transgender and intersex people who were born in the state to amend the gender marker on their birth certificates, became law. The law now requires “clinically appropriate” treatment as determined by a licensed medical or mental health professional in order to change the gender marker, as opposed to an affidavit from a physician who performed surgery on the individual, effectively eliminating the outdated surgical requirement and bringing Illinois in line with federal passport and US consular birth certificate standards.

Lambda Legal Sues U.S. Departments of Education and Justice for Documents about Withdrawal of Guidance on Transgender Students

NEW YORK (August 23, 2017) – Lambda Legal yesterday filed a federal lawsuit to compel the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice to release information about their decision to withdraw guidance detailing the protections transgender students have under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which bans discrimination in education on the basis of sex. After the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice rescinded the guidance in February, Lambda Legal filed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for documents and communications on the decision to withdraw the guidance.
