Prop 8 Case Back in Federal Court After California Supreme Court Rules that State Law Grants Proponents Right to Appeal

 

(San Francisco, November 17, 2011)—The California Supreme Court today ruled that the proponents of Proposition 8 have an adequate interest under California law to defend the constitutionality of such an initiative when public officials decline to appeal a judgment invalidating it. Anne Arundel School Employee Gets Benefits for Same-Sex Spouse Following Lambda Legal Discrimination Complaint

(Anne Arundel County, MD November 16, 2011)—Lambda Legal announced today that Stacy Pipkin, an administrator with Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), will receive employment benefits for her same-sex spouse, following a Lambda Legal complaint on her behalf with the Maryland Commission on Human Relations and policy change from AACPS.

LGBT Equality Groups Urge Ninth Circuit to Reject Attack on Prop 8 Trial Judge

SAN FRANCISCO - Today, a coalition of groups advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality filed a friend-of-the-court brief urging the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold a U.S. District Court decision that rejected a move to vacate the historic August 2010 ruling that invalidated Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that stripped the freedom to marry from same-sex couples in California. Lambda Legal, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the ACLU of Northern California and Equality California filed the brief in Perry v.

New Jersey Superior Court Rules to Allow Lambda Legal to Proceed with Marriage Equality Case

A New Jersey Superior Court Judge ruled today that Lambda Legal will be allowed to proceed with its case seeking marriage equality on behalf of Garden State Equality, New Jersey’s statewide LGBT advocacy organization, and seven same-sex couples and their children harmed by the state’s unequal civil union system.

Lambda Legal and Idaho Safe Schools Applaud Changes to School District’s Student Club Policy

Lambda Legal and the Idaho Safe Schools Coalition today applauded a Boise-area school district for approving a student club policy that eliminated a new requirement that students get parental permission to participate in clubs and other restrictions that would have harmed lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and violated their rights.

Lambda Legal Hosts Fair Courts Forums in Des Moines and Iowa City

Lambda Legal Honors the Legacy of Frank Kameny, LGBT Rights Pioneer

(New York, October 12, 2011)—Frank Kameny, Harvard-trained astronomer, Army veteran, and lifelong advocate for LGBT equality, died yesterday at 86. Fired from his federal job simply for being gay, Kameny argued what is believed to be the first civil rights claim in a U.S. court based on sexual orientation.
