Lambda Legal to Challenge Discriminatory Military Service Policy Preventing People Living with HIV from Enlisting in U.S. Armed Forces

Today, Lambda Legal filed a legal challenge to the U.S. Military policy that prevents people living with HIV from enlisting in the U.S. Armed Forces. The discriminatory policy requires that applicants for appointment and enlistment, as well as individuals being inducted into military Services, be screened for HIV and denied entry if they test positive.

Judge Refuses to Block Florida Law Known as “Don’t Say Gay or Trans”

Yesterday, a U.S. District Court refused to halt Florida’s enacted House Bill 1557, commonly referred to as the “Don’t Say Gay or Trans” law, and dismissed the case altogether, but is allowing the plaintiffs an opportunity to file an amended complaint by November 3. The law bans discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in grades K-3 and restricts such discussions for students through grade 12 based on undefined standards of appropriateness.

Today, Lambda Legal announced that Jennifer C. Pizer has been named permanent Chief Legal Officer (CLO). Pizer has served as the organization’s acting CLO since June, leading a department of twenty-six attorneys and eleven paraprofessionals with offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, D.C.

The settlement, including monetary compensation, comes in a lawsuit filed by Lambda Legal and Arnold & Porter on behalf of a transgender Prince George’s County Public School teacher who suffered years of discrimination, harassment, and abuse.

Texas Court Expands Injunction Blocking State From Targeting Families of Trans Youth Who Are Members of PFLAG National

The Travis County District Court issued a third injunction today blocking the State of Texas from implementing a directive targeting trans youth and their families across Texas. The directive ordered the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) to investigate parents who work with medical professionals to provide their adolescent transgender children with medically necessary healthcare.

Transgender Public School Students Sue to Block Discriminatory Oklahoma School Facilities Law

Lambda Legal, the ACLU, and the ACLU of Oklahoma have brought a legal challenge on behalf of three transgender students to S.B. 615, which bans all transgender students in Oklahoma from using school restrooms consistent with their gender identity.

Quigley Leads Letter Urging Administration to End Discriminatory Military Policy

U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), Vice-Chair of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, along with Representatives Sara Jacobs (CA-53) and Barbara Lee (CA-13), led 31 members of congress in a letter urging the Biden Administration to direct the armed services to permit individuals living with well-managed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Hepatitis B virus (HBV) to join the military. Members of the Senate also sent an identical letter, led by Senator Chris Coons of Delaware and Kristen Gillibrand of New York.
