(Chicago, May 7, 2012) - Today three Iowa Supreme Court Justices who ruled in favor of Lambda Legal's case (Varnum v. Brien) in a unanimous decision establishing marriage equality in Iowa will receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.
Des Moines, IA—Today, it was announced that three Iowa Supreme Court Justices who were ousted in the 2010 judicial retention vote will receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award in May. This is the highest and most prestigious award that can be bestowed upon public servants and was created to celebrate political courage.
Lambda Legal, along with several Iowa-based legal organizations, will host two forums on how best to preserve a fair and impartial judiciary after last year's ouster of three Iowa Supreme Court justices. The events will take place at public libraries in Des Moines and Iowa City.
In Illinois, Gov. Pat Quinn signed the civil union law Monday, a huge step forward on the road to full equality. And the very next day, across the state line, the Iowa House voted 62 to 37 in favor of a constitutional amendment barring all legal recognition of same-sex couples.
