Lambda Legal Mourns the Loss of Civil Rights Giant Del Martin

(San Francisco, August 27, 2008) — Civil rights leader Del Martin, who made international headlines in June when she and her partner became the first same-sex couple to legally marry in California, died today in San Francisco. She was 87. Martin's spouse and partner of more than 50 years, Phyllis Lyon, was at her side.

Iowa's Married Same-Sex Couple Celebrates First Year of Marriage on the Anniversary of Lambda Legal's Victory

(Des Moines, Iowa, August 25, 2008) — August 31 will mark the one year anniversary of the first marriage of a same-sex couple in Iowa after Lambda Legal's victory in which a district court ruled that barring same-sex couples from marriage is unconstitutional.

California Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Lambda Legal Lesbian Client Denied Infertility Treatment by Christian Fundamentalist Doctors

(San Francisco, August 18, 2008) — The California Supreme Court has ruled that a group of doctors cannot use their religion as a legal excuse for violating the civil rights of their former patient — an Oceanside lesbian — to whom they refused an infertility treatment based on their religious views about her sexual orientation.

Lambda Legal Applauds Repeal of Discriminatory 1913 Law in Massachusetts

(New York, July 29, 2008) — The Massachusetts Legislature has repealed the 1913 anti-marriage law that barred out-of-state same-sex couples from marrying there, and Governor Patrick has already announced he will sign the bill. (New York, NY July 25, 2008) — In a letter submitted today, Lambda Legal urges President Bush to end the ban on visitors and immigrants who are HIV positive by signing the President's Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) reauthorization bill.

Lambda Legal Files Federal Lawsuit Against Georgia General Assembly Officials for Firing Transgender Woman

(Atlanta, Georgia, July 22, 2008) — Today Lambda Legal announced a federal lawsuit against Georgia General Assembly officials on behalf of Vandy Beth Glenn, a transgender woman who was fired from her job as a Legislative Editor after she stated her intention to live as a woman in accordance with her health care providers' recommendations.

Lambda Legal Urges Newfield Central School District to Retract Its Stance on New York Human Rights Law

(Newfield, NY, July 22, 2008) — In an effort to persuade the Newfield Central School District (NCSD) to abandon its stance that the New York Human Rights Law (NYHRL) does not apply to public schools, Lambda Legal today sent school board members a letter outlining the legal flaws in their position and warning of future consequences for students who may face antigay discrimination.

California Supreme Court Rules on Bennett v. Bowen

(San Francisco, July 16, 2008) – Today, the California Supreme Court issued an order in Bennett v. Bowen, S164520, denying a petition to remove Proposition 8, the proposed marriage ban, from the November ballot.

Lambda Legal Files Complaint Against Arizona-based Antigay Adoption Companies on Behalf of New York Same-Sex Couple

(New York, July 1, 2008) — Lambda Legal is filing a discrimination complaint with the New York Attorney General's office on behalf of a gay couple in New York barred from posting their online adoptive-parent profile by Arizona-based Adoption Profiles, LLC and Adoption Media, LLC solely because they are a same-sex couple — violating New York antidiscrimination laws.

Lambda Legal Sues Florida Hospital for Mistreatment of Deceased Lesbian's Family

(Miami, Florida, June 25, 2008) — Today Lambda Legal announced a lawsuit against Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami for the negligent and outrageous treatment towards the family of Lisa Pond, a lesbian whose partner of 18 years and their three children were not allowed to see her as she slipped into a coma and died.
