Lambda Attorney Named One of Country's Most Influential Lawyers

(NEW YORK, June 12, 2000) — Citing impressive accomplishments advancing civil rights for lesbians and gay men nationwide, the National Law Journal has named Evan Wolfson one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Monday.

Texas Court Overturns 'Homosexual Conduct' Law, Clears Men Arrested in Bedroom

(NEW YORK, June 8, 2000) —The Texas Court of Appeals Thursday overturned the state’s anti-gay “Homosexual Conduct” Law, reversing convictions of two Houston men arrested for allegedly having sex in the bedroom of one man’s home, said Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, which challenged the law and represented the pair.


In a teleconference at 10 a.m. CDT, Thursday, June 8, Lambda Staff Attorney Suzanne B. Goldberg, with Lambda Cooperating Attorney Mitchell Katine of the Houston law firm Williams, Birnberg & Anderson, will discuss the ruling.

Texas Tosses 'Homosexual Conduct' Law, Clears Two Men Arrested at Home

(NEW YORK, June 8, 2000) — A Texas appellate court on Thursday declared the state’s “Homosexual Conduct” law unconstitutional, overturning the convictions of two men arrested by Houston police in an apartment for having consensual sex, said Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, which defended the men.

National Conference to Look at Plight of Prisoners with HIV

(NEW YORK, June 8, 2000) — Six months after the United States Supreme Court let stand Alabama's segregation of prisoners with HIV, a broad coalition of health and civil rights experts and clergy is meeting to build a national strategy to defend the diminishing rights of this vulnerable population.

Ruling on Washington Visitation Law Suggests Balanced Approach to Parental Rights

(NEW YORK, June 5, 2000) — Making its strongest statements yet on changing family structures, the United States Supreme Court on Monday struck down an expansive Washington visitation statute and rejected an appeal by a couple seeking more time with their grandchildren. The Justices, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund noted, were careful not to foreclose protections for lesbian, gay, and other non-biological parents.

Florida Appeals Court Detects Anti-Gay Prejudice in Custody Decision

 


(ATLANTA, May 31, 2000) — Sending a strong message that the best interests of children are not served by baseless assumptions and anti-gay stereotypes, a Florida appellate court has rejected a custody decision because it allowed prejudice to keep a lesbian mother from her two young children, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Wednesday.

United Airlines Is Official Carrier For Lambda Legal Defense

(NEW YORK, May 1, 2000) — Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund and United Airlines have agreed to a three-year commitment designating the carrier as Lambda’s official airline and corporate sponsor. United’s sponsorship will enable Lambda to extend the reach of its legal defense team in its work around the country assisting lesbians, gay men, and people with HIV and AIDS.

Vermont Gives Marital Protections to Lesbian and Gay Couples

(NEW YORK, April 25, 2000) —Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund commended the Vermont legislature Tuesday for making Vermont the first state in the nation to extend to lesbians and gay men most of the protections and rights traditionally associated with marriage.

High Court to Hear BSA Defense of Anti-Gay Policy

On Wednesday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m. the U.S. Supreme Court will hear argument in Boy Scouts of America v. James Dale.

Lambda Senior Staff Attorney Evan Wolfson will deliver the oral argument on behalf of Dale, the Eagle Scout ousted for being gay after 12 years of exemplary participation. Both Dale and his attorney Evan Wolfson will comment outside the Supreme Court following the hearing.
