After Passage of Anti-Marriage Measure, Californians Must Unite for Gay Equality

(LOS ANGELES, March 8, 2000) — California voters have approved Proposition 22, a divisive ballot measure that for the first time in California history restricts which out-of-state marriages the state government will honor. But the terms of the debate regarding gay people’s equality and freedom to marry have shifted dramatically, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Wednesday, and the challenge now for the measure’s backers is to show that the Knight Initiative was not aimed at harming lesbian and gay families.

Lambda Launches Web Page to Speed the March to Lesbian and Gay Equality

(NEW YORK, March 3, 2000) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, with a new online initiative, urged lesbians, gay men, and their supporters around the country to take immediate action in the face of tough challenges that now threaten civil rights equality.

With Californians heading to state polls Tuesday, Lambda called for action to defeat Proposition 22, the anti-gay, anti-marriage measure also known as the Knight Initiative.

(NEW YORK, February 16, 2000) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund on Tuesday filed suit against a Brooklyn landlord and a real estate agent for refusing to rent a Park Slope apartment to two men because they are gay.

Court Says Arkansas Sodomy Law Challenge May Proceed

(NEW YORK, February 11, 2000) — The Arkansas Circuit Court has ruled that the legal challenge to the state’s 1977 law forbidding certain sex acts between consenting adults of the same sex can go forward, paving the way for seven lesbian and gay Arkansans to finally have their day in court, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said.

This was the third failed attempt by the Arkansas Attorney General and the Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney to have the case dismissed.

Clinic Settles Anti-Gay Bias Complaint by Washington Heights Resident

NEW YORK, February 9, 2000) — A clinic affiliated with the New York Presbyterian Hospital has settled a complaint by a 25-year-old gay man whose doctor made inappropriate references to his sexual orientation in medical records – even placing it on a "Problem List" usually reserved for ailments or diagnoses – while being treated for allergies, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Wednesday.

Third Annual National Freedom to Marry Day in Cities Nationwide

(NEW YORK, February 8, 2000) — Some 30 events will mark National Freedom to Marry Day in cities and towns around the country, with supporters of lesbian and gay families gathering for symbolic weddings, marches and rallies, from Memphis and Tucson to Boston and Fort Collins, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund announced Tuesday.

Judge Rules El Modena High Gay-Straight Alliance Must Be Allowed to Meet

(SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA, Friday, February 4, 2000) — U.S. District Court Judge David O. Carter issued a preliminary injunction today, ordering the Orange Unified School District to allow the Gay-Straight Alliance Club at El Modena High School to meet on school grounds while their case proceeds.

Court Ruling Expected Friday on School Meetings for Gay-Straight Student Club

(SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA., Thursday, February 3, 2000) — A federal court is set to decide Friday morning whether Orange Unified School District officials must permit students to meet on school property and have equal access to school facilities for the Gay-Straight Alliance Club at El Modena High School.

Lambda Appeals Against Sheriff in Brandon Teena Murder

(NEW YORK, February 2, 2000) — Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund Wednesday announced that it will litigate the Nebraska appeal of a meager trial court award against a county whose sheriff failed to protect Brandon Teena from a brutal 1993 murder.

This year’s popular film,“Boys Don’t Cry” and documentary, “The Brandon Teena Story,” chronicle Brandon’s life and tragic death. Born female and named Teena Brandon, he was living as a man in Falls City, Nebraska, when he was murdered at age 21.
