Lambda Helps Secure Benefits for HIV-Positive Policy Holders

(NEW YORK, Monday, April 13, 1998) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund lauded a New York State appeals court decision last Friday upholding the dismissal of a case brought by New England Mutual Life Insurance Company. The company sought to avoid payment of AIDS-related disability benefits to a long-time policy holder in Rockland County on the basis of his HIV-status at the time he purchased the policy.

(LOS ANGELES, April 13, 1998) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund applauded the United States federal district court ruling issued Friday upholding the City of San Francisco's policy to contract only with businesses that provide employee benefits to unmarried as well as married workers.

Lambda Helps Win Protections for Employees with HIV

(LOS ANGELES, April 10, 1998) -- A California appeals court Thursday affirmed the right of people who seek disability payments after losing a job to challenge the firing as discriminatory.

In Bell v. Wells Fargo Bank, the court ruled that Andrew Bell, an HIV-positive man who worked for Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco, could pursue an anti-discrimination lawsuit against his former employer even though he had applied for disability benefits.

(CHICAGO, March 31, 1998) -- Coretta Scott King, addressing a Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund gathering in Chicago on Tuesday, called for all supporters of civil rights in America to join the struggle against homophobia and anti-gay bias.

Narrow California Ruling Does Not End Battle Against Anti-Gay Discrimination by Boy Scouts

(LOS ANGELES -- Monday, March 23, 1998) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund deplored Monday's California state Supreme Court ruling, which held that the state's law does not reach anti-gay discrimination by organizations like the Boy Scouts of America.

Lambda, co-counsel in the case, Curran v. Mount Diablo Council of the Boy Scouts of America, emphasized that the court made a narrow ruling that applies only to California and does not stop efforts against the BSA's anti-gay discrimination elsewhere in the country.

High School Students Sue Salt Lake City School Board


(SALT LAKE CITY, March 19, 1998) -- In a lawsuit filed Thursday by four civil rights organizations, a Utah student club called the East High Gay/Straight Alliance challenged discrimination against it by the Salt Lake City Board of Education.

Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund (lead counsel in the case), the ACLU of Utah, the ACLU of Northern California, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights filed the suit on the club's behalf in the United States District Court for the District of Utah.

Lambda to U.S. Supreme Court: ADA Protects People with HIV

(NEW YORK, Tuesday, March 17, 1998) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, on behalf of a host of major medical and public health associations, urges the United States Supreme Court to rule that the Americans with Disabilities Act protects people with HIV.

The Supreme Court will hear argument about its first AIDS-related discrimination case, Randon Bragdon, DMD v. Sidney Abbott, et al, on Monday, March 30. Lambda attorneys, Catherine Hanssens and Heather Sawyer, will be available for questions after the hearing.
