For First Time, NY Federal Judge Strikes Down Entire Law Barring Gays From Military Service

(NEW YORK, July 2, 1997) -- In the first full defeat of the military's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' statute, a federal judge in New York today struck down the law, saying it unconstitutionally imposes special rules on gay troops.

U.S. Judge Eugene Nickerson of the Eastern District of New York rejected both the conduct and speech portions of the law, ruling that they violate the Constitution's equal protection guarantee and serve no purpose but to placate the fears of some heterosexual troops.

Lambda Criticizes High Court's Ruling Against Assisted Suicide

Lambda Helps Win Review of Russian Lesbian's Asylum Plea

(NEW YORK, June 26, 1997) — A San Francisco federal appeals court this week gave new hope to a Russian lesbian and other gay people seeking political asylum, sending the case of Alla Pitcherskaia back to the Bureau of Immigration Appeals, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Thursday.

Ohio Appeals Court Declares Sexual Orientation Irrelevant in Custody Battles

(CHICAGO, June 20, 1997) -- An Ohio state appeals court declared that a gay father should not have lost custody of his son, ruling that sexual orientation has no significance in child custody decisions, said Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund Friday.

Lambda Responds to 'Disturbing' Anti-Gay Federal Court Decision

(NEW YORK, Sunday, June 1, 1997) --Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, in an angry statement, denounced a Georgia federal court ruling that upheld the firing of an Atlanta attorney from a government job solely because she is a lesbian who had a private, religious commitment ceremony with her partner.

Lambda Supports City of Atlanta's Fight for Domestic Partnership Benefits

(NEW YORK, May 8, 1997) Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund was joined by a host of Georgia civil rights groups Thursday in defending Atlanta's effort to extend health benefits to dependent domestic partners of City workers.

Lambda and its Georgia allies filed a joint friend-of-the-court brief with the Georgia Supreme Court in City of Atlanta v. Morgan, the case stemming from the Atlanta City Council's passage of a limited domestic partnership benefits ordinance.

Lambda defeated Alachua County's anti-gay Amendment 1 following arguments at a Circuit Court hearing in Gainesville, Florida.
